Overview

What Is A System Audit Tool?

A system audit tool scans the software, hardware, security configuration, and supported permissions of a computer and reports the results in one place. It can help IT and security teams check whether protections such as disk encryption, firewall, third-party antivirus, EDR, VPN, screen lock, password policies, and system integrity controls are configured as expected. It can also provide information about CPU usage, memory, disk status, battery health, network latency, and connected USB devices.

26 checks

The wAnywhere System Audit Tool provides up to 26 checks on Windows, with the exact number varying by operating system because user permission checks differ across Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux

The audit also collects additional device inventory information, including hostname, operating system, architecture, uptime, RAM, CPU, device model, patch dates, IP information, Wi-Fi signal, geolocation, and a device fingerprint.

  • Hostname
  • Operating system
  • Architecture
  • Uptime
  • RAM
  • CPU
  • Device model
  • Patch dates
  • IP information
  • Wi-Fi signal
  • Geolocation
  • Device fingerprint

The result is a central view of device configuration and health that can help IT teams identify systems requiring further investigation or action.

The Problem

Why Regular Device Audits Matter

  • Unpatched Systems

Outdated operating systems and applications may leave devices exposed to known vulnerabilities. Patch management checks help teams identify systems where updates may require attention.

  • Disabled Security Protections

Firewalls, antivirus, encryption, screen locks, and other controls may be disabled or incorrectly configured. A system audit helps identify missing or inactive protections.

  • Limited Endpoint Visibility

Remote, hybrid, and distributed teams may use different devices, networks, and working environments. A central audit report gives IT teams a clearer view of device configuration and health.

  • Manual Audit Work

Checking devices individually and maintaining spreadsheets can take significant time. Automated audit results provide a more consistent way to review device status across the workforce.

With wAnywhere, teams can establish a repeatable process for checking workforce device health and security configuration.

How It Works

How the Device Health Check Works

Run a system audit in three simple steps.

  1. Download and Install

Download the wAnywhere System Audit application and install it on a supported device.

The application is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux builds, with operating-system support depending on the current application package.

Windows installation requires administrator rights because the application uses a per-machine installation.

    • Windows
    • macOS
    • Linux
  2. Run the Automatic Device Scan

Start the application and sign in to begin the audit.

The scan checks supported software, security, hardware, network, and permission parameters. A typical full scan takes approximately 1–2 minutes, although the duration can be longer when system update, storage health, or network checks take additional time.

The scan can complete locally without an internet connection. Some information, such as public IP, geolocation, network latency, Wi-Fi signal, and certain patch information, requires network connectivity.

If the device is offline, the scan can still complete and the results are saved locally until they can be synced.

  3. Review the Report

Once the scan is complete, review the results through the wAnywhere portal.

    Use the report to identify:

    • Security configuration gaps
    • Hardware and performance concerns
    • Permission issues
    • Patch-related issues
    • Devices that may need maintenance
    • Devices that may require configuration changes

What the Tool Reads and What It Never Reads

The wAnywhere System Audit Tool is designed to assess device configuration and hardware health. It is not intended to monitor the content of an employee's work.

What the Tool Reads

The tool reads supported device configuration and hardware information, including:

  • Disk encryption status
  • Firewall status
  • Antivirus and EDR status
  • Password policy configuration
  • Screen lock and auto lock settings
  • Operating system version
  • Patch status
  • CPU usage
  • Memory usage
  • Disk status
  • Battery health
  • Network latency
  • Connected peripherals
  • Network connection information
  • Supported user permission information

The audit also collects certain device inventory and network information required for the report.

What the Tool Does Not Need to Read

The system audit does not need to inspect:

  • Screen contents
  • Screenshots or video
  • Keystrokes
  • File contents
  • Documents
  • Personal data inside files
  • Browsing history
  • Application usage
  • Email content
  • Chat messages

The audit focuses on supported device settings, configuration, permissions, and hardware telemetry rather than inspecting the content of an employee's work.

Data Storage and Access

The System Audit Tool stores some information locally and syncs authenticated audit results with the wAnywhere platform.

On the Device

The application stores information such as:

  • Login session information
  • The latest scan payload
  • Last daily audit date
  • Application version
  • Application logs
  • Device identification information

In the wAnywhere Platform

For authenticated users, audit results are sent to the wAnywhere API so they can be accessed through the wAnywhere portal.

The uploaded information can include:

  • User identity information
  • Organisation and department
  • Host and operating system information
  • Hardware information
  • Audit results
  • Network information
  • Permission results

Access to synced audit information requires a wAnywhere account login.

Report retention and server-side deletion policies should be confirmed in the applicable wAnywhere privacy or platform policy before publishing specific retention periods.

Linux can run as a normal user. Root or sudo access is recommended for certain firewall and disk-health checks.

Internet Connection

An internet connection is required for:

  • Initial sign-in
  • Session refresh
  • Uploading audit results to wAnywhere
  • Certain network-based metrics
  • Some operating system update checks

An internet connection is not required to complete the local scan.

If synchronization fails because the device is offline, the scan remains saved locally. The application does not currently maintain an automatic retry queue.

Deployment

Deploying Across Your Fleet

For a single device, the application can be downloaded and installed directly.

For larger deployments, IT teams may need to distribute the application across multiple workforce devices and consolidate results through the wAnywhere portal.

The current application documentation does not confirm support for specific enterprise deployment methods such as:

  • Silent installation
